The Banyan Tree Tunnel in Stuart Florida
If you have the pleasure of visiting our fair city sometime in the future, try taking a drive down Saint Lucie Blvd. and going through our famous Banyan Tree Tunnel. Here’s what it looks like on a bright sunny day. Before the 2004 hurricanes, it was even darker, but we did lose a few branches which opened it up a little. But in a few years, it will be back to its former splendor.
Did you know that the banyan Tree is native to India? It was introduced to Florida by Thomas Alva Edison in 1925 when he planted the first one in the US. It was around 4 feet tall at the time. This tree is still alive covering over 400 feet, reported as being the third largest Banyan tree in the world.
